The Central Park Zoo, usually crowded with lines winding in front of the. ticket booth, was far from that when we visited. I have fond memories of visiting as a child and having to push through groups of people to be able to see Gus, the Polar Bear, who is no longer alive. That being said, there definitely were people there.
We had to reserve a time slot online that we would visit at because of cover restrictions. Other restrictions were in place, such as a limit on the amount of people who could go into an indoor enclosure, such as the penguins or tropical birds. We waited in a short line outside to see those animals. We also saw the sea lions, red panda, and looked hard for the grizzly bear.
Overall, people generally seemed very happy to be at the zoo, part of the zoo culture that has not changed because of the pandemic. There were quite a few families with little children, especially babies, who were clearly thrilled that places like the zoos were open for our enjoyment. Especially because the zoo is mainly outdoors, it is the perfect place to go for a hour or two during the pandemic if you have nothing to do.
